Welcome to Mergozzo: a stroll through the town and its neighbouring villages will delight you in every season! Lake Mergozzo is surrounded by lakes and mountains, nestled between the Verbano region with Lake Maggiore and nearby Lake Orta, and the rugged Ossola region home to Mt. Rosa the second highest peak in Europe.
Lake Mergozzo is one of the cleanest bodies of water in Europe, thanks in part to the absence of motor boats. At one time it was part of Lake Maggiore, from which it was eventually cut off due to alluvial material from the Toce river. The main town of the lake bears the same name; Mergozzo is a typical lakeside town with charming buildings - many made of local stone- stacked against one another. The steep, narrow alleyways that snake throught this maze of buildings lead to the heart of the town: the lakeside square where a centuries old elm tree grows.
The history of ancient Muregocium is documented by numerous prehistoric and roman remains which are housed in the local archeological museum. Historically this is a town of of stonemasons who found their work in the local granite quarry of Montorfano and the marble quarry of Candoglia.
